Father of the Bride Lacing Her Dress - Wedding Detail

The father of the bride lacing the back of his daughter's dress before the ceremony. We photograph a lot of getting-ready moments, and this one earns its place because of what is not in the frame. No faces, just his hands and the ribbon, and a lifetime of practice at fixing things for her. Converting to black and white pulls out the texture in his hands and the sheen of the satin, and keeps the eye where it belongs. Moments like this are why we have two photographers at every wedding: one of us is with the bridal party for the wider scene, and the other is free to watch for the small, unrepeatable details that happen at the edges of the room. Photographed in Nova Scotia, where we have shot weddings since 1995.
