Guide to Halifax Headshots

Professional business headshot of a woman on a neutral background, Halifax

Clothing, hair, makeup, retouching and knowing your audience - how to prepare so your headshot reflects how good you are at what you do.

You are good at what you do. Make sure the image you share with the business world and prospective clients reflects it. Our goal is to create images that help you connect with others - ones you will be proud to share. Here are the things worth considering before your headshot session.

Where will your image appear?

Will your headshot sit beside others on a company website? If so, let us know so the lighting and background match the rest of the team. Could you use a second, more casual look for LinkedIn or other social platforms? It may also be a good time to get a nice picture for your personal accounts.

Makeup

Makeup is recommended, but we find it is best to keep it as natural as possible. There is generally no need for professional makeup, though it is worth considering if your headshots are for modelling or acting.

Hair

It is best to be happy with your hair when you come in. For men, usually within the first week of visiting the barber. For women, a trip to the salon beforehand is not usually necessary, but some people like to.

Clothing

Darker solids are always a safe bet. Stay away from bold or distracting colours and patterns. White should be avoided or used carefully - it can be fine under a jacket. The goal is for your clothing to complement, not distract from, your face. Think of what you would wear to meet a new client.

Retouching

Our retouching process is a source of pride for us. We carefully retouch and enhance each image you select: removing shadows, blemishes and small imperfections, and adjusting the background. We improve the appearance of eyes and skin without the excessive changes that make people look unrealistically photoshopped.

Know your audience

For a standard business headshot, you usually want to convey that you are both confident and approachable. That is the default look we shoot for. Let us know if you are after something different. We also offer a signature session with more looks, outfit changes and a choice of backgrounds, with different crops and expressions to suit your marketing.

Relax

We hear "I hate having my picture taken" on a regular basis. It is a common feeling and it is perfectly fine. By giving you constant feedback and direction throughout the session, you will not have time to feel awkward in front of the camera.
